A 78-carat rough diamond from the Ekati mine in Canada has sold for $2.8 million - a record for Canadian stones. The stone was named the Ekati Spirit by an employee after a company contest.
The stone is internally flawless and is considered to be one of the mine's most significant gem-quality. It's not the biggest stone to come out of the mine; a 182-carat stone found two years ago.
No word yet on who the buyer is and it's not clear if the stone will be cut and set.
Cut or not, we are already thinking of all the different jewellery pieces that it may be eventually turn in to; diamond rings, diamond engagement rings, diamond wedding rings, diamond pendants, diamond earrings or diamond bracelets? So many opportunities!
